Nimba County, Liberia – March 23, 2025 – Frustrated by years of unfulfilled promises and government neglect, residents of Gilipa, Nyenikpala, and Tinsu in Nimba County have threatened to boycott the upcoming Nimba County Senatorial by-election scheduled for April 22, 2025.
The residents say they have been repeatedly let down by both county leaders and the national government, who have failed to deliver essential services and infrastructure despite years of political support from the communities.
Speaking on behalf of the residents, N. Aaron Payetee said their decision stems from continued neglect, including poor roads, a lack of healthcare facilities, and inadequate educational opportunities.
“Our people have endured years of suffering with no tangible results. The promises made during elections are never fulfilled, leaving us with inadequate roads, no proper healthcare facilities, and limited access to education,” Payetee said in a statement.
The statement emphasized that the residents are no longer willing to support an electoral process that fails to bring real change, adding that they will not participate in the by-election unless their basic needs are addressed.
The grievances of these communities are not new. Over the years, multiple promises have been made by politicians during election campaigns, yet many development projects remain incomplete or entirely abandoned.
Residents are demanding urgent action from both county officials and the national government, calling for improved infrastructure, better healthcare, and access to quality education. They argue that without these basic services, participating in elections only legitimizes a system that continues to ignore their needs.
The threat of an election boycott could have significant political implications in Nimba County, a key voting bloc in Liberia. As the April 22 by-election approaches, it remains to be seen whether the government will engage with these communities and address their concerns before the boycott takes effect.
For now, the people of Gilipa, Nyenikpala, and Tinsu have made their stance clear: no development, no votes. The next move is up to the government.
