FJK – August 23, 2024 – Prince Zammie, who was mistakenly believed to have died during the recent clashes between the CDC and state security forces in Monrovia, has addressed the media from his hospital bed at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital.
In an exclusive statement, Zammie, 43, clarified that he is alive but was severely beaten during the unrest. “I didn’t die from the beating and teargas, but I was confused like hell,” Zammie told reporters. His image had circulated on social media with claims suggesting he had been fatally injured, but he has now confirmed that he is recovering at the government-run facility.
Zammie recounted the traumatic experience of being assaulted before being transported to the hospital by Liberia National Police (LNP) officers. His statement comes amid reports that 16 Public Security Unit (PSU) officers and civilians, including Doris Dolley, Hannah Gwua, and Cheston Ziah, were also injured in the same incident.
The LNP has strongly refuted the erroneous claims of Zammie’s death, labeling the circulated information as false and misleading. They emphasized the importance of verifying information before spreading it and condemned the harmful effects of such deceitful reports.
The LNP has also called for public calm and reiterated its commitment to keeping the public informed about Zammie’s condition and that of other injured officers. “We are committed to keeping the public informed about the health status of Prince Zammie and other Joint Security officers who sustained injuries during Thursday’s protest,” the LNP stated.
Additionally, fourteen individuals arrested during the protests have been charged and are now facing legal proceedings. The suspects, including Aaron Soe, Emmanuel D. Sumo, Korpo L. Boakai, Gifty Johnson, Elijah D. Gweh, Christian K. Perry, Itea F. Borbor, Varney D. Wilson, Lawrance G. Bessiah, Samuel Joe, Joseph Z. Benson, Prince Zammie (charged in absentia), Derrick Sekeh, Odonnell A. Corbin, and Alieu S. Brima, face numerous charges such as Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder, Riot, and Physical Obstruction of Government Function.
The LNP has urged all citizens to avoid engaging in violent activities and to cooperate with law enforcement to maintain peace and order in the community.
