Vatican City, Italy— His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., was received in audience today by His Holiness Pope Francis at the Vatican Apostolic Palace. This meeting underscores the strong and enduring relationship between Liberia and the Holy See, reinforcing Liberia’s commitment to engaging with global partners for peace, development, and social progress.

During their discussions, President Boakai and Pope Francis highlighted ongoing collaborations between Liberia and the Catholic Church, particularly in education and healthcare. The President expressed his deep gratitude for the Church’s contributions to the welfare of the Liberian people, emphasizing the pivotal role of its educational institutions and medical services in promoting social welfare and human dignity.

Following the audience with the Holy Father, President Boakai met with His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of His Holiness, and His Excellency Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations. Their talks focused on Liberia’s current social and economic challenges, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to fostering peace, stability, and sustainable development in the country.

The discussions also addressed pressing international and regional issues, particularly migratory challenges affecting African nations. The leaders emphasized the importance of international cooperation in tackling the root causes of migration, ensuring human rights, and promoting development across the continent.

President Boakai expressed his appreciation for the Holy See’s continued support for Liberia and reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with the Catholic Church for the benefit of the Liberian people.
